Jasmine De Guia, Vice President of the University of Santo Tomas Technovation Society and one of the Ten Outstanding Filipino Students, earned a spot in Huawei’s Seeds for the Future 2025 program in Dongguan and Shenzhen, China, after a highly competitive selection process that accepted only 10 participants from the Philippines.

The prestigious global initiative brings together young leaders from across the world to explore emerging technologies while promoting sustainability, cross-cultural exchange, and leadership development.

De Guia first discovered the program online and was drawn to its focus on innovation and sustainability. After advancing through an exam and interview, she shared that preparation was key to her success.

“I really pushed myself to prepare. I tried my best to ace the exam and, during the interview, I shared my experiences from hackathons, my previous internship, my goals, and the initiatives I believe in,” she recalled. “I think the program was really looking for people who are curious, eager to learn, and open to global perspectives that can also be applied in our own country.”

Throughout the program, participants engaged with future-focused topics such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud computing, and Digital Power. De Guia was particularly inspired by Huawei’s smart city innovations for disaster response, traffic, and public safety, which she believes could be transformative if applied in the Philippines.

“This program gave me a deeper understanding of how technology can directly address real-world problems,” she said, reflecting on the experience. “It also pushed me to think more critically about my role as a young Filipino leader in driving innovation.”

Beyond the technical lessons, De Guia highlighted the value of building connections with fellow delegates and gaining a broader perspective on global challenges. The experience, she noted, strengthened her confidence and reinforced her commitment to use technology for sustainable development in the Philippines.

As advice to aspiring Filipino students, she encouraged “Don’t underestimate yourself. These programs value authenticity and eagerness to learn, not just academics. Share your story and be open to new perspectives.”

For De Guia, the program is both a personal milestone and a step toward creating opportunities for others. “Leadership means linking global insights to local initiatives. I hope to empower more Filipino youth to innovate and make a difference,” she said.

Her journey shows how programs like Seeds for the Future can empower young Filipinos to become innovators and leaders who contribute meaningful change to their communities and country.
